Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 Verse 20

न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः ।
अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे ॥२-२०॥

na jayate mriyate va kadacin na y’am bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah
ajo nityah shashvato y’am purano na hanyate hanya mane sharire ॥ 2-20 ॥

Lord Krishna is engaged in repeatedly telling Arjuna to scuttle all feelings of Moha (extreme emotional attachment) towards his brethren, in absence of which he would never realize he was a soul atman, the spirit within! Krishna tells Arjuna that at no point of time in the entire lifespan of present cosmos… a soul atman, the spirit within ever dies. As it does not take birth, it will never have an end. The existence of a soul atman, the spirit within always was eternal!

As the soul atman exists from times immemorial… never had a beginning, it had attributes of being imperishable, indestructible… unborn! Free from manifestations of material world… soul atman, the spirit within never perishes when body becomes dead. A soul atman, the spirit within never ages with time… ever existing, primeval, eternal… free from limitations of material world. It also had nothing to do with five senses and mind. With passage of time… it neither decays nor dies. Every soul atman was pure consciousness within.

The Explanation

Lord Krishna knows well that unless Arjuna realized his true potential… he would never agree to fight war of dharma (righteousness) that involves killing his own maternal grandfather Bhishma Pitamah and guru Dronacharya. Once Arjuna realized that he was a soul atman, the spirit within and not a physical manifest human form… it would be easy for him to defeat his enemies, the Kauravas! Even until now Arjuna associated soul atman with body. He feared incurring sin by killing his close relatives and friends. He preferred cowardice to fighting the war.

For a human being to realize that one was a soul atman, the spirit within… it needs not years but decades of contemplation on path of pure spirituality! As detailed by Maharishi Ramana… contemplation was the only means to reach god in present life. We have to reason out every query through path of logistics. Path of religion (path of rituals) never lead one to God Almighty. We had to be truthful in life to understand dictates of Lord Krishna in Mahabharata. Unless we were truthful… you could never hear the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman that seemed to come from within our heart!

Every human being on mother earth had ones Lord Krishna situated in our heart. By practicing absolute truthfulness… we can seek guidance from Lord Krishna at every stage of spiritual pursuit! Lord Krishna… God Almighty was not distinct from us. God existed in our heart in miniscule form… as our soul atman, the spirit within! Following path of self enquiry (Neti… not this, not this) any human being world over can easily realize that we were not a body manifesting a soul atman but a soul atman, the spirit within manifesting a human body! We were primarily a cosmic power much beyond comprehension of most human beings.

Through limited power of senses and mind… we could never realize what souls’ atmans or God Almighty was all about! It was not within power of manifest to realize the unmanifest! Everything cosmic was sublime… could be understood only by reading in between the lines. Literal reading never makes one realize what souls atmans were all about. By taking logistical approach… we have to search for answers to our spiritual queries. Those who indulged in rituals whiled away their precious time on mother earth. We just could not indulge in trivialities of life all the time… if we were to reach god in present life.

The moment we realized we were a soul atman, the spirit within… a consciousness… half the spiritual journey was complete! All relationships of mother earth come to naught moment we realized we were a soul atman, the spirit within on its cosmic life cycle of 8.4 million manifestations, entailing an earthly journey of 96.4 million years! For a soul atman to get liberated… it really needs a maximum of 96.4 million earthly years. Of 8.4 million manifestations on whole… 1.1 million manifestations occurred in human form. Practically human beings had sufficient time to reach stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally moksha salvation.

Only if we desire expediting spiritual journey… our indulgence in scriptures of Hinduism was necessitated. By hearing what Lord Krishna had to say in matters spiritual… we could definitely make it to god in present life! All teachings contained in Bhagavad Gita were an allegory to make human beings realize the abstract hidden truths of life. If our goal of life was reaching god in present life… we could never do without teachings contained in Bhagavad Gita! As a human being we were at liberty to follow any path… but the goal of our soul atman, the spirit within always remained, regaining its lost original pure prime pristine primordial form at the earliest.

It is in our interest, in the interest of our soul atman, the spirit within that we realized we were not a mortal form but a consciousness… a spirit, a soul atman! The moment this realization dawns on us that we were a soul atman, the spirit within… the fear of death vanishes forever! In the circumstances… it becomes easy for us to fight the enemy head-on! We finally learn how to differentiate right from wrong all the time. By following dictates of Bhagavad Gita in all affairs of life… we finally become wise, an essential ingredient on path of pure spirituality!
