Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 Verse 15

यं हि न व्यथयन्त्येते पुरुषं पुरुषर्षभ ।
समदुःखसुखं धीरं सोऽमृतत्वाय कल्पते ॥२-१५॥

yam hi na vyathayantete purusham purusharshabha
samaduhkhsakham dhiram somritatvaya kalpate ॥ 2-15 ॥

Lord Krishna addresses Arjuna, O Purushrestha (best among men): one who is not affected by strife, tribulations of material world… one who perceived happiness and pain equally in all stages of life finally reached stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and salvation moksha. The soul atman of such a human being finally gains liberation from cycle of birth and death forever.

Path of spirituality, path of true inner self does not belong to travelers of material path. Those engrossed in materialistic pursuits of life never reached god in their lifetime. Moksha salvation is achieved only by one who succeeded in establishing total control over five senses and mind.

For a serious seeker of spirituality, both pain and happiness meant the same. When in distress… people remembered god! Those who remembered god in happiness also were true travelers of spiritual path. Exercising power of discrimination when people realized that sense and sense objects was hurdle on path of pure spirituality, all feelings of sorrow ceased to exist.

We experienced pain and pleasure through medium of senses and sense objects. By undertaking spiritual journey, by exercising power of discrimination we slowly realized that total control over five senses and mind was only an initial step towards God Almighty. Control over five senses was not that easily achieved. It was a step-by-step long drawn process.

Krishna knew that only one possessing capability of Arjuna could succeed in establishing absolute control over five senses and mind. He urges Arjuna to fight battle of dharma (righteousness) unmindful of consequences of material world.

The Explanation

In Bhagavad Gita chapter 2 verse 15 Krishna enumerates factors that lead human beings towards stage of moksha salvation. As per Krishna… stage of moksha salvation is not that easily reached! Only a Parantapa, Purushrestha like Arjuna was competent to travel spiritual journey and reach god in his lifetime.

But for Arjuna to successfully travel spiritual path, control over five senses and mind was an absolute must! Control over five senses and related sense objects is achieved when one maintained equipoise in all worldly stages of life… like happiness and sorrow. As a human being… how could one remain unaffected when in pain?

Krishna advises Arjuna that we were primarily a soul atman, the spirit within on its cosmic journey of 8.4 million manifestations that entailed an earthly life of 96.4 million years! As no soul atman could purify self of its own… it needs a medium, a body to work out its karma… remove dross impurities within! Having manifested human form, it was not for humans to get affected by pain and sorrow of material world.

For a traveler of spiritual path… both happiness and sufferings meant the same. One has to learn to bear it. In Hinduism this has been termed as Agni Pariksha. While undergoing penance of highest order what one finally expects to achieve? It is control over five senses and mind that needs time… not years but many decades! Only a very ardent seeker of spirituality like Swami Vivekananda finally succeeds in following path of Arjuna in Mahabharata.

Nuances of material world never affect a soul atman, the spirit within! A true seeker of spirituality realized this cosmic truth of life. By maintaining equipoise in all circumstances of life… one finally establishes absolute control over five senses and mind. By offering fruits of karma performed to god all the time, one can easily establish control over five senses and mind! Where there is a will… there is a way! For a true Karma Yogi nothing was impossible to achieve.

In Bhagavad Gita chapter 2 verse 15 Lord Krishna has summarized importance of establishing control over five senses and mind. Control over senses and sense objects were not a necessity of worldly people. Only those undertaking spiritual journey were required to maintain equipoise in equally opposite circumstances of life. For a true Karma Yogi, material riches carried no meaning. Why run after ephemeral riches of life if goal of life was reaching god in present life.

Exercising power of discrimination that was ingrained into every human being since birth… we can slowly establish control over senses and sense objects finally reaching stage of enlightenment and moksha salvation one day. This is the stage when our soul atman finally liberates self from bondage of earthly life to reach god forever.

Moha (extreme emotional attachment), sense and sense objects were a direct hurdle on path of pure spirituality. Krishna imparts teachings of Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna to make him realize various pitfalls on path of pure spirituality. All ties of earthly life as per Krishna were temporal. The whole earthly sojourn by a human being was a temporary phase in life of a soul atman. It was through process of evolution… human beings reached higher brackets of spiritual life!

Ordinary mortals, commoners may not succeed in one life to establish absolute control over five senses and mind. For this, God Almighty ordained a long journey of 1.1 million manifestations in human form to reach stage of moksha salvation. Absolutely there was no hurry to pursue spirituality in life. Krishna knew that Arjuna could make it in his lifetime and thus Krishna imparted teachings of Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna to understand intricacies of cosmic life.
